Message from Alfie 6 October 2010

Hi Everyone

As you can probably imagine, the last few weeks have been a total whirlwind for me. Sunday was possibly the most exciting performances of my career so far – working with some absolutely sensational singers, actors, musicians and performers;  the inspirational Cameron Mackintosh, his amazing team and everyone at The 02:  playing to thousands of people and live by satellite to hundreds of cinemas and eventually the DVD.  What a fabulous and life-changing experience and what an amazing musical “Les Miserables” really is – Its just incredible. Such great writing from Claude-Michel Schonberg, Herbert Kretzmer, Alain Boublil, and Jean-Marc Natel.  Everyone that knows me, absolutely knows I have so enjoyed being Jean Valjean, both at The Queens Theatre and now at The 02.  I can’t wait to see the dvd !!

More news soon – just starting rehearsals for Romeo et Juliette at The Royal Opera House.

Love to you all

Alfie x

PS – There were no takers to my Twitter auction !!  Where were you all?

  • Alfie

It was clear you were enjoying the concert and so were we!! Just one concern is that I do hope you won’t abandon the smaller more intimate venues after experiencing such a superb reception/ audience appreciation at both Queens and the 02. It’s not that I don’t wish you continuing success, I new you would be come a super star from the time I heard you sing at the Kings Lynn Corn exchange, but I also so enjoy your performances at the smaller friendly venues.

See you in La Bohemme in January, unless you have something up your sleeve before then?

    Love Ann (Norfolk)

  • Yes – just SO lovely for you that you had such a great reception & so very, very well deserved. I hope too that you’ll still do the concerts at smaller, more intimate venues – like others on here I’m disappointed by the cancellation of the “Concerts in Churches” series; it would be lovely if you could do something similar instead of this before too long!

  • We thoroughly enjoyed Les Mis (25 years) from the O2. We watched from our local cinema on Monday Oct 7th. What a fantastic performance by everyone. You were exceptional.

Being in Canada, we had to search the Internet to find out more about you. I trust that you own a TVR just to remember your humble beginnings. A good friend of mine owns three TVRs here and he was very interested to hear your story.

We look forward to buying the DVD when it is available here in Canada

  • I thought you were fantastic on Sunday evening at the O2, unfortunately we couldn’t get tickets and so had to watch the concert at the cinema. It was strange because we were all clapping after songs although none of you could possibly hear us. All the performances were good but you were exceptional and brought tears to my eyes when you sang bring him home.

  • thank you soooo much foryour performance on sunday, days on I am still on cloud nine.

  • An amazing performance on Sunday! My 11 yr old son was so moved by you singing ‘Bring him home’ that he was in floods of tears! Just fantastic!!

  • I just wanted to say that I went to the O2 last Sunday to see you perform in Les Miserables and when you sang Bring Him Home I was moved to tears it was so beautiful! When you finished the song there was a magical moment when the whole of the O2 was stunned into silence before the biggest ovation I have seen happened. In the Daily Mail Baz Bamigboye summed up beautifully exactly how it made me feel, that it was as if you were God’s annointed vocalist, and I am not religious! Thank you so much for the best show I have ever seen, I feel truly blessed to have been there to witness it.

  • Thank you thank you thank you for sunday, I will never forget Bring him home….I could have clapped and cheered forever…That smile of yours said it all, we love you and you deserved every bit of the applause.

  • Alfie, I can only add to what everyone else has said, which is that you were simply amazing last Sunday afternoon – thank you so much for being you, a truly talented guy , with the most extraordinary ability to project that beautiful tenor voice in a way that held the entire O2 spellbound. I’m so glad that I was there , it will be something that I will still talk about in years to come. As you finished ‘Bring him home’, I could feel everyone around, just holding their breath and as Jayne said, a split second before the rapturous applause and tears – I’ve just never experienced anything like it! Like everyone else, I’m dying for the DVD to come out. I do hope you’ll be able to see the reaction – I hope those cameras were panning around! I know you heard and felt it but it was an extraordinary sight to see – a totally spontaneous standing ovation in the middle of an act! Well done Alfie, you’ve won yourself legions of new fans and I’m really pleased for you – the years of hard work have really paid off! If you’re ever up in Yorkshire I’d love to buy you a pint!!!!

  • Alfie, I watched the show from Canada with my 13 yr old daughter on Monday, Oct 4. She is entering the world of musical theatre and and it was one of the most moving experiences for me..to have her there to experience the magic with me. She told me that Les Mis was beyond what she had thought musical theatre could be, and I have to thank you for making her fall in love with Les Mis like I did. I had seen the show live and didn’t think it could be any more beautiful but I was wrong. You richly deserved the ovation after Bring Him Home, and to see you share the stage with the other three amazing Valjeans, was absolutely the highlight of the night for me. Congratulations and I can’t wait to see the DVD, either!

  • My friend & I went to the cinema on the sunday night in Southport.I was enthralled by Alfie’s performance.Looking around the faces of the people after your performance of “Bring him home” was priceless through my tears.During the interval we stood outside to watch the fireworks over the Marine Lake which added to the magic of the evening. The cast & production were superb..Thankyou so much.Just a word I saw Les Mis recently in our Little Theatre the cast were wonderful.A young man called James Loughlin played Thenardier he is 1 to watch can be seen on you tube.Jean Valjean was played by Christopher Rimmer equally wonderful As were all the cast..

  • Alfie, please never never never shave the beard! You now LOOK and sound sexy!

  • Just saw the Les Mis 25th anniversary event at the cinema here on the Sunshine Coast in Australia with my teenage daughter. We both agree that you simply stole the show. Your performance of ‘Bring Him Home’ was so incredibly moving and as so many have commented already, it resulted in eyes filling with tears. The standing ovation you received was well deserved. I look forward to the release of the DVD – although of course seeing you perform Jean Valjean on stage would be just that little bit more amazing! Maybe you’ll venture ‘downunder’ sometime if both yourself and Mr Mackintosh could be persuaded. =]

  • All I can say is, I was there on that night when Alfie and Co gave the best performance of any musical ever shown, anywhere, and to see my hero Colm Wilkinson alongside Alfie at the end was a memory to take to the Grave, Simply Amazing and I will be forever grateful to have been there! Thank you Alfie, Thank you so very much for giving us the show of a lifetime.

  • Saw the concert at the cinema yesterday & was blown away by your voice. You are amazing, so talented. Bring him home was the most emotional version I have ever heard & I’ve seen Les Miz 5 times up to now. It would be marvellous if you could be in the actual show again next year for a time. Fingers crossed. Thankyou for the privilege of listening to you. The rest of the cast were excellent as well. But you made the show.

  • A long time ago we went to see a production of Les Miserables in Edinburgh and when we saw there was a 25th Anniversary Performance being shown in the cinema in Dundee we said it was ‘a must go and see’ and we were not disappointed. We were absolutely enthralled from start to finish! When the credits came up at the end we waited to see who performed as Jean Valjean. We both said at the same time ‘Alfie Boe’ – who is he? Now we know. An exceptional voice and we can’t wait to get the DVD. A truly wonderful cast and production. Hope you will come to perform in Scotland sometime as we would love to see you in a live production.

  • What an amazing performance in Les Mis.
Unable to obtain ticket at O2 but saw it at Cinema twice.
I do hope you will appear in the West End production next year.
    Well done and many congratulations.
I am a friend of Darren Jeffery who was also in Romeo and juliet at the ROH. Another wonderful performance.
Enjoyed the backstage tour so much.
    Good luck for the future.
    best wishes John,Cambridgeshire

  • Already seen Les Mis twice at the Queens this year, just can’t get enough of it. Went to see the replay of 02 celebration at the cinema in Newbury this weekend, what a stellar performance, how I wish I’d been there on the night. This was the first time I have seen you in the part of Jean-Valjean – both my friend and I were absolutely blown away by your performance and completely wrecked by the end it was so emotional, just the opening bars of ‘Bring Him Home’ has us reaching for our tissues. Absolutely awesome!

  • Well Alfie , I got the DVD of the les mis concert at the O2 for Christmas and I watched it last night and I am still crying. I wish I had been there, your voice is amazing

  • I got the DVD of the Les Mis 25th concert on Friday and haven’t stopped playing it since!!! I thought it was fantastic. I never thought anyone could come close to Colm Wilkinson as Valjean, but Alfie you blew that thought right out of the water!!! You were absolutely brilliant!! I so wish I’d been there!!! But (please God) I can get to see you when you do Les Mis in the summer. I hope Cameron picks you for his film version. There really is no one else who can hold a candle to you. You ARE Valjean.
All the very best in everything you do, ( I agree the beard is gorgeous!!!)
