Mayor Reveals Details for St George’s Day Concert in Trafalgar Square

Alfie Boe to headline free musical feast

* Newton Faulkner also on line up, and West End stars lead celebration of musical theatre
* The Theory of 6 Degrees and Jamie West join Rhythm of London showcase

Opera tenor, West End star and Top 10 recording artist Alfie Boe and platinum selling musician Newton Faulkner will be the special guests at this year’s St George’s Day celebrations in Trafalgar Square, which are being organised by the Mayor of London on Saturday 23 April.

Alfie Boe, who is returning to Les Misérables later this year (with Matt Lucas), will lead a celebration of the unbeatable musical theatre that attracts people from around the world to the capital. The free event will also provide an exclusive preview of Newton Faulkner who has just announced a summer festivals tour. In addition, there will be a Rhythm of London showcase offering the opportunity to hear new and emerging talent – and potential stars of the future.

Also taking to the stage will be TV and musical star Lara Pulver (Robin Hood, True Blood, soon to be seen in Spooks) and West End star Matt Rawle (Evita, Zorro), as well as Annalene Beechey (Les Miserables, Marguerite) and Tam Mutu (Love Never Dies, Waking the Dead).

Rising young band The Theory of 6 Degrees will be amongst the Rhythm of London highlights; the youngest band ever to have played at Glastonbury, their guitar based pop is gaining them much attention from both media and fans alike. Rhythm of London Busking Underground winner Jamie West will be making a welcome return to the square, as he marks the release of his latest EP, ‘Walking the Movies’. The afternoon will also feature young singers and musicians from across the capital.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: ‘On St George’s Day, we celebrate the fantastic talent and creativity that make this such a wonderfully exciting place to live, not just London, but the country as a whole. And as the nation prepares for the most momentous occasion of the year, we are putting on a joyous and inspirational free event to help get everyone in the mood. So have a full English and head down to Trafalgar Square.’

The St George’s Day Concert is one of the highlights of this year’s Rhythm of London, the annual showcase of young musical talent organised by the Mayor of London as part of efforts to increase musical participation and education across the capital.
